What the golden ratio is

The golden ratio, written with the Greek letter $\varphi$ (phi), is the number

It is irrational, so its decimal expansion never terminates or repeats. What makes it special is a self-referential property: $\varphi$ is the positive solution of

which rearranges to $\varphi = 1 + \dfrac{1}{\varphi}$. A direct consequence is that the reciprocal of $\varphi$ is just $\varphi$ minus one:

Dividing a line in the golden ratio

A line segment is divided in the golden ratio when the whole length relates to the longer part exactly as the longer part relates to the shorter part. Writing the longer part as $a$, the shorter part as $b$, and the whole as $t = a + b$:

Because $1 + \dfrac{1}{\varphi} = \varphi$, the whole can be written directly in terms of the longer part:

This one identity gives every conversion you need, depending on which quantity you already know:

Worked example

Suppose you have a shelf that is $t = 100$ cm wide and you want to place a divider so the two sections are in the golden ratio.

Step 1 — the longer part. Divide the whole by $\varphi$:

Step 2 — the shorter part. Subtract from the whole:

Step 3 — check the defining property. Both ratios should equal $\varphi$:

The divider therefore sits about 61.8 cm from one end.

Connection to the Fibonacci sequence

The ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers — 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, … — converges to $\varphi$:

The values oscillate around $\varphi$ and close in on it as the numbers grow. This is why $\varphi$ appears in Binet's formula, which expresses each Fibonacci number in closed form using powers of $\varphi$.

Use in design and architecture

The golden ratio is a real mathematical constant, and some artists and designers deliberately use golden rectangles or the golden spiral as composition aids. A golden rectangle is one whose side lengths are in ratio $\varphi : 1$; removing a square from it leaves a smaller golden rectangle, which is the basis of the familiar spiral construction.

It is worth being cautious about the broader claims, though. Assertions that the Parthenon, the Great Pyramid, the Mona Lisa, or the proportions of the human body were deliberately built around $\varphi$ are frequently overstated — later analysts often find the measurements fit only after selective cropping or generous rounding. The mathematics of $\varphi$ is exact and elegant; the historical and aesthetic claims attached to it are much softer, and correlations are easy to manufacture after the fact. Treat $\varphi$ as one useful proportioning tool among many, not a universal law of beauty.
