Power-to-Weight Ratio

Raw power tells you only half the story. A 150-horsepower engine flings a light track car down the road but barely troubles a loaded van. What matters for acceleration and climbing is how much power there is per kilogram to move — the power-to-weight ratio. This calculator divides power by mass and reports the result in watts per kilogram.

The formula

The ratio is power divided by mass:

with $P$ in watts and $m$ in kilograms giving watts per kilogram (W/kg). Despite the everyday name "power-to-weight", the figure is really power per unit mass; true weight would fold in gravity, but the number quoted for cars and cyclists uses mass.

Worked example

A hatchback produces $P = 110\ \text{kW}$ and has a kerb mass of $m = 1450\ \text{kg}$:

Shedding $150\ \text{kg}$ lifts the same engine to $84.6\ \text{W/kg}$ — a gain you could otherwise only buy with more power.

Typical figures

For cars the ratio uses the whole vehicle's mass; for cyclists it uses the rider's body mass, because on a climb it is your own weight you must haul against gravity.

Why it predicts performance

Newton's second law says acceleration is force divided by mass, and the driving force a powertrain can sustain scales with its power. Put those together and acceleration tracks power per unit mass, not power alone. The same logic governs hill climbing, where the rate you can gain height is set by spare power divided by weight. That is why engineers and athletes chase the ratio from both ends at once — adding power and cutting mass.
