What a carbon offset cost estimate shows
A carbon offset is a tradable certificate representing a reduction or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide somewhere else — for example, protecting a forest, capturing landfill gas, or running a direct-air-capture plant. The cost of offsetting a given footprint is simply the amount of CO₂ multiplied by the price of one tonne of offset:
Cost = CO₂ (tonnes) × price per tonne
This calculator applies that multiplication so you can price any amount of emissions against any per-tonne rate you enter.
How the estimate is built
Two inputs drive the result:
CO₂ to offset. The mass of carbon dioxide, entered in tonnes, kilograms, or pounds. The value is converted to tonnes internally before pricing.
Offset price per tonne. What one tonne of offset costs. Because offsets trade in a voluntary market rather than at a single fixed rate, this is left fully editable; the default of about 15 per tonne is a mid-range placeholder, not a quoted price.
The output is the total cost of offsets for the emissions entered.
Worked example
Suppose you want to offset 12 tonnes of CO₂ at a price of $15 per tonne:
- Emissions in tonnes: 12 t.
- Price per tonne: $15.
- Total: 12 × $15 = $180.
Halving the price to $7.50 per tonne would bring the same 12 tonnes to $90, while a higher-integrity credit at $60 per tonne would raise it to $720. The cost tracks the price per tonne directly, so the credit you choose matters as much as the amount you offset.

What price does and does not tell you
A higher price does not guarantee a better offset, and a lower price does not make one worthless — the quality depends on the underlying project. Useful things to check include additionality (the reduction would not have happened without the credit), permanence (how long the carbon stays stored), accurate measurement, and independent certification under a recognised standard. Two credits at the same price can differ substantially in these respects.
Limitations
- Prices are volatile. Voluntary-market rates shift with supply, demand, and policy, so any single figure ages quickly.
- Quality is not priced consistently. The same per-tonne cost can buy credits of very different integrity.
- This is a multiplication, not an endorsement. The calculator prices whatever amount and rate you enter; it does not verify or recommend any project.
Offsets address emissions that are hard to eliminate, but they carry more uncertainty than not emitting in the first place. Most frameworks treat reducing emissions at the source as the priority and use offsets for the remainder. Use this calculator to size a budget or compare prices, not as certified carbon accounting.

How much does it cost to offset carbon?
It depends entirely on the price per tonne, which varies widely. At a mid-range 15 per tonne, offsetting 5 tonnes costs about 75, and 15 tonnes costs about 225. Low-cost nature-based credits can bring the figure to a few dollars per tonne, while engineered carbon removal can cost 100 or more per tonne. Multiply the tonnes you want to offset by whatever price the credit you are considering actually charges.
Why do offset prices vary so much?
Price reflects the type of project, where and when it operates, how permanent the storage is, and how rigorously the credits are verified. Forestry and avoided-deforestation credits are often the cheapest; renewable-energy credits sit in the middle; and durable engineered removals such as direct air capture are the most expensive. Vintage (the year the reduction occurred) and third-party certification also move the price.
What makes an offset high or low quality?
Quality hinges on additionality (the reduction would not have happened anyway), permanence (the carbon stays out of the atmosphere), accurate measurement, and avoidance of double counting. Independent standards such as Verra, Gold Standard, and others audit projects against these criteria, though coverage and rigour differ. A cheaper credit is not automatically worse, and a costly one is not automatically better — the underlying project details are what matter.
Should I offset or reduce emissions first?
Cutting emissions at the source removes the uncertainty that comes with any offset, so most frameworks treat reduction as the priority and offsets as a way to address the remainder that is hard to eliminate. This calculator prices whatever amount you choose to offset; it does not assume offsetting is a substitute for lowering emissions in the first place.
