What a food waste footprint measures

Food that is bought and then thrown away still carries the full environmental cost of producing it: the land, water, energy, and emissions of growing, processing, packaging, and transporting it, all spent for no nourishment. A food waste footprint expresses that loss in three ways at once — the weight of food discarded over a year, the greenhouse gases embodied in it (in kilograms of CO₂-equivalent, kg CO₂e), and the money it represents. This calculator builds all three from a single input: how much food a household throws away in a typical week.

How the estimate is built

The weekly weight is first scaled to a year, then multiplied by two factors.

Annual weight = weekly waste × 52.18. A year is 365.25 days, or 52.18 weeks, so a weekly figure is multiplied by 52.18 rather than a rounded 52.

Annual footprint = annual weight × 2.5. The factor of 2.5 kg CO₂e per kilogram is a life-cycle average for the mixed contents of a household bin — a blend of cereals, produce, dairy, and some meat. It sits between the very high footprint of wasted meat and the low footprint of wasted vegetables.

Annual cost = annual weight × price per kilogram. An average food price per kilogram converts the wasted weight into money. A blended grocery basket runs very roughly $4–8 per kilogram once fresh produce, dairy, and meat are combined.

Worked example

Take a household that bins 2 kg of food a week and puts the average price of that food at $5 per kilogram:

• Annual weight: 2 kg × 52.18 = 104.4 kg per year
• Annual footprint: 104.4 kg × 2.5 = 261 kg CO₂e
• Annual cost: 104.4 kg × $5 = $522

So a couple of kilograms a week — a few spoiled items, some plate scrapings, a forgotten bag of salad — adds up to roughly a quarter-tonne of CO₂e and several hundred dollars over a year.

The scale of household food waste

Household food waste is a large share of the total. In many high-income countries, avoidable food waste runs at roughly 60–90 kg per person per year, or about 1–2 kg each per week. A family of four can therefore reach 4–6 kg a week without anything looking obviously wrong. The single most useful thing this calculator can prompt is to weigh a few weeks of actual bin or caddy contents: a measured figure is far more accurate than any national average, and it is often larger than people expect.

What the footprint factor covers

The 2.5 kg CO₂e per kilogram factor is an average across a mixed bin, so the composition of what is wasted shifts the real number substantially:

Food breaking down in landfill can also release methane, which is not counted separately here; the factor represents the embodied production emissions of the wasted food.

Ways to lower a food waste footprint

• Plan meals and shop to a list, so less is bought than can be eaten before it spoils.
• Store produce correctly and use the freezer for surplus to extend its life.
• Read date labels as a guide. For many foods a "best before" date marks quality, not safety.
• Cook with leftovers and use up older items first.
• Compost what cannot be eaten, which keeps it out of landfill — though composting does not recover the emissions already embodied in the food.

Limitations

• The 2.5 kg CO₂e factor is an average. A bin heavy in meat and dairy carries a larger footprint per kilogram; one of mostly bread and vegetables a smaller one.
• Only embodied production emissions are modelled. Disposal, transport to landfill, and methane release are not added separately.
• Prices vary widely by region, season, and shopping habits, so the cost figure is only as good as the price entered.
• A single weekly figure is an average; real waste fluctuates week to week.
