Five Sizing Systems, One Converter
This converter translates clothing sizes across five major systems — US, EU, UK, Japanese (JP), and Italian (IT) — for both women's and men's garments. Enter any size in any system and all equivalents appear at once.
How the Conversion Works
Clothing sizes evolved separately in each country, so the numbers carry no common unit. The conversions here are based on widely accepted offset rules:
Women's clothing
| US | EU / IT | UK | JP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 32 | 4 | 5 |
| 2 | 34 | 6 | 7 |
| 4 | 36 | 8 | 9 |
| 6 | 38 | 10 | 11 |
| 8 | 40 | 12 | 13 |
| 10 | 42 | 14 | 15 |
| 12 | 44 | 16 | 17 |
| 14 | 46 | 18 | 19 |
Formulas: EU = US + 32, IT = EU (same scale), UK = US + 4, JP ≈ US + 5 (odd numbers).
Men's jackets / suits (chest in inches)
| US | EU / IT | UK | JP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 34 | 44 | 34 | 44 |
| 36 | 46 | 36 | 46 |
| 38 | 48 | 38 | 48 |
| 40 | 50 | 40 | 50 |
| 42 | 52 | 42 | 52 |
| 44 | 54 | 44 | 54 |
For men's jackets: EU = US + 10, UK = US (chest inches are shared), JP = EU.
Why Sizes Differ by Country
Clothing sizes developed from different body measurement traditions and have never been unified internationally. The US uses arbitrary even numbers with no direct connection to body measurements. The EU and Italian systems approximate a chest or bust measurement divided by two (in cm). The UK system closely mirrors the US but with a 4-number shift for women's. Japanese sizing uses odd numbers for women's and aligns with EU for men's suits. None of these scales are perfectly linear across the full range, and brands apply their own grading rules, so the converter gives standard midpoint estimates.
Tips for Shopping Across Borders
- Always check the brand's own size chart first. A conversion table gives you the starting point; brand charts give the exact answer.
- For knitwear and stretchy fabrics, size down one if the brand runs generous.
- When body measurements (bust, waist, hips in cm) are available, use those instead of size numbers for the most reliable fit.
- JP women's sizes are odd numbers: 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15. If the converter shows "13", look for that tag in Japanese stores.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is my EU clothing size if I wear US size 8?
A US women's size 8 equals EU size 40. The EU clothing size is calculated by adding 32 to the US size: EU = US + 32. So US 4 = EU 36, US 6 = EU 38, US 8 = EU 40, US 10 = EU 42, US 12 = EU 44. For men's jackets, the EU size is the US size plus 10: US 40 = EU 50. Note: Italian (IT) sizes use exactly the same scale as EU, so EU 40 = IT 40.
How do Japanese clothing sizes compare to US?
Japanese women's clothing uses odd numbers (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15…) and runs about 5 sizes above US. A US women's size 8 is JP 13, US 6 is JP 11, US 4 is JP 9. For men's suits, Japanese sizes follow the EU/European scale, so a US 40 jacket corresponds to JP 50. Note that Japanese sizing can vary by brand, so checking the brand's size chart against body measurements (bust/waist/hips in cm) gives the most accurate fit.
Why do clothing sizes differ between countries?
Clothing sizes developed independently in each country and are based on different body measurement standards and conventions. The US uses arbitrary numerical labels (0, 2, 4…) without a direct link to body measurements. The EU and Italian systems use a number that is roughly twice the bust or chest measurement in centimeters divided by two, creating a more systematic scale. The UK system closely resembles the US but with a 4-size offset for women's garments. There is no single international standard, so conversion tables are always approximate — the same body measurement can correspond to a different size number depending on the brand and country.
