What neutralization means

Neutralization is the reaction between an acid and a base in which donated protons (H⁺) combine with hydroxide ions (OH⁻) to form water. When exactly enough base has been added to react with all of the acid — or vice versa — the mixture has reached its equivalence point. At that point the amounts are matched in stoichiometric proportion, and this calculator finds the volume or concentration that gets you there.

The product $M \times V$ is the number of moles in solution. Multiplying the acid side by $n$ counts every proton the acid can donate, and multiplying the base side by $m$ counts every hydroxide the base can supply. At the equivalence point those two totals are equal. Rearrange for whichever quantity is unknown:

• Base volume: $V_b = \dfrac{n \, M_a V_a}{m \, M_b}$
• Base concentration: $M_b = \dfrac{n \, M_a V_a}{m \, V_b}$
• Acid volume: $V_a = \dfrac{m \, M_b V_b}{n \, M_a}$
• Acid concentration: $M_a = \dfrac{m \, M_b V_b}{n \, V_a}$

For a monoprotic acid and a single-hydroxide base ($n = m = 1$) this collapses to the familiar $M_a V_a = M_b V_b$.

Worked example

How much 0.1 M sodium hydroxide neutralizes 25 mL of 0.1 M hydrochloric acid? Both are 1:1 ($n = m = 1$):

Equal concentrations and a 1:1 ratio give equal volumes.

Polyprotic acids and bases

The factors $n$ and $m$ are what make this more than a simple product rule. A polyprotic acid donates more than one proton per molecule, and some bases release more than one hydroxide per formula unit.

Consider neutralizing 25 mL of 0.1 M HCl with calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂, at 0.05 M. Because each Ca(OH)₂ supplies two hydroxide ions, $m = 2$:

The doubled hydroxide count and the halved concentration cancel, so 25 mL still does the job.

The equivalence point is not always pH 7

Reaching the equivalence point means the reactants are matched — it does not guarantee a neutral solution. A strong acid neutralized by a strong base gives a neutral salt and water, landing near pH 7. But a weak acid with a strong base leaves a basic salt (equivalence point above pH 7), and a strong acid with a weak base leaves an acidic salt (below pH 7). The volume relationship this calculator uses holds regardless of the resulting pH.

How this differs from a titration curve

This tool answers the endpoint question: how much titrant is needed, or what concentration an unknown must have given a measured endpoint volume.
