Understanding parts per billion

Parts per billion (ppb) describes how much of a trace substance is present in a mixture relative to the whole. In a mass-to-mass context it is the mass of solute divided by the total mass of solution, scaled up by one billion so that very small amounts become readable numbers. It is the natural unit whenever a concentration is too dilute for parts per million to be convenient — trace contaminants in water, impurities in ultrapure chemicals, and residues in food all live in the ppb range.

The formula

Because only the ratio matters, the two masses can be in any unit as long as they are the same — micrograms, milligrams, grams, or kilograms.

Finding the solute mass for a target

Rearranging the formula for the solute lets you plan a solution at a chosen concentration:

The ppb-to-µg/L approximation

For dilute aqueous solutions, 1 ppb (mass/mass) is approximately 1 microgram of solute per litre of solution. One litre of water has a mass very close to 1,000 g, so one part per billion of that mass is about 1 µg per litre. Water-quality limits are frequently quoted interchangeably as ppb or µg/L for this reason, and the approximation is accurate to well within measurement uncertainty for dilute solutions.

For concentrated solutions or liquids with a density substantially different from 1 g/mL, the mass-to-volume conversion requires the actual density.
