Drag Force

When an object moves through a fluid — air, water, or any other medium — the fluid pushes back with a resistance force called drag. Drag is what limits the top speed of a car, determines how much fuel a plane burns, and sets the terminal velocity of a falling object. The aerodynamic drag equation lets you quantify this force given the fluid conditions, the object's speed, and its shape.

The drag equation

The standard formula for aerodynamic drag is:

$F_d = \tfrac{1}{2} \rho v^2 C_d A$

where $\rho$ is the fluid density, $v$ is the relative velocity between the object and the fluid, $C_d$ is the drag coefficient, and $A$ is the reference frontal area. The $\tfrac{1}{2}\rho v^2$ part is the dynamic pressure — the kinetic energy per unit volume of the flow — and $C_d A$ converts it into a force.

Because velocity appears squared, drag increases very rapidly with speed: doubling the speed quadruples the drag force. This is why fuel consumption (which must overcome drag power $P = F_d \cdot v$) rises with the cube of speed at highway velocities.

Drag coefficient reference values

The drag coefficient $C_d$ summarises how well streamlined a shape is. It is determined experimentally in a wind tunnel or by computational fluid dynamics. Representative values:

• Streamlined teardrop body: $C_d \approx 0.05$
• Modern passenger car: $C_d \approx 0.25$–$0.35$
• SUV or van: $C_d \approx 0.35$–$0.45$
• Sphere: $C_d \approx 0.47$
• Cyclist in racing position: $C_d \approx 0.7$
• Flat plate perpendicular to flow: $C_d \approx 1.2$

Worked example

A sedan with a drag coefficient of 0.30 and frontal area of 2.2 m² drives at 30 m/s (108 km/h) in air at 1.225 kg/m³. What is the drag force?

$F_d = \tfrac{1}{2} \times 1.225 \times 30^2 \times 0.30 \times 2.2$

$= 0.5 \times 1.225 \times 900 \times 0.30 \times 2.2 = 363.8\ \text{N}$

The drag power at this speed is $P = F_d \cdot v = 363.8 \times 30 \approx 10.9\ \text{kW}$, which must be continuously overcome just to maintain speed against air resistance.

If the speed doubles to 60 m/s, the drag becomes $4 \times 363.8 = 1{,}455\ \text{N}$ and the power required rises to $87.3\ \text{kW}$ — eight times as much power for twice the speed.

Reducing drag in practice

Drag can be reduced by targeting each factor in the equation:

Lower $C_d$: Streamlining the body (smooth nose, tapered tail, flush surfaces) reduces pressure separation and viscous skin friction. Modern EVs achieve $C_d$ values below 0.20, compared to around 0.50 for a 1970s brick-shaped car.

Reduce $A$: A smaller frontal area means less drag at the same $C_d$. Sports cars sit low and narrow; racing cyclists tuck to minimise their silhouette.

Lower $\rho$: At higher altitudes the air is less dense. Commercial aircraft cruise above 10,000 m partly to exploit the thinner air (density roughly one-quarter of sea level).

Limitations

The drag equation assumes steady, incompressible flow and a constant $C_d$. In reality, $C_d$ varies with the Reynolds number and can change sharply at certain speeds (for example the drag crisis on a sphere near Re ≈ $5 \times 10^5$). At speeds above about Mach 0.3 compressibility effects become significant. For unsteady or separated flows, or when lift-induced drag is present, a more detailed aerodynamic analysis is needed.
