Positioning a ladder at the right angle is one of the most important factors in preventing falls. Safety organisations and ladder standards worldwide converge on a working angle between 70° and 80° from the horizontal, with about 75.5° as the usual target. The 4-to-1 rule is the practical method for achieving this.

The 4-to-1 rule

For every 4 units of vertical height the ladder reaches, the base should be placed 1 unit away from the wall. With height $h$ and base distance $d$:

$d = \frac{h}{4}$

The resulting angle between the ladder and the ground is:

$\theta = \arctan\!\left(\frac{h}{d}\right) = \arctan(4) \approx 75.96°$

This angle is constant regardless of the absolute height — the ratio fixes the geometry. A steeper angle increases the risk of the ladder tipping backward; a shallower angle increases the risk of the feet sliding out.

Minimum ladder length

The ladder must span the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the wall, the ground, and the ladder itself. By the Pythagorean theorem:

$L = \sqrt{h^2 + d^2} = \sqrt{h^2 + \left(\frac{h}{4}\right)^2} = h\,\sqrt{1 + \frac{1}{16}} = \frac{h\sqrt{17}}{4}$

Worked example

For a wall height of 6 m:

Extension above the landing

The length calculated above reaches only to the contact point on the wall. When using a ladder for roof access or working at an eave, safety guidance requires the ladder to extend at least 1 m (3 ft) above the landing surface so the climber has something to hold while stepping on and off. Select a ladder whose usable working length exceeds $L$ by at least this margin.

Manufacturers typically rate a ladder's maximum safe working height as the overall length minus 1 to 1.5 m (the top rungs are not intended as standing positions). Always check the duty rating for the intended load.
