What typing speed metrics actually measure
Whether you are preparing for a job that requires a minimum WPM, tracking improvement over time, or just curious about your baseline speed, this calculator converts raw typing-session data into the metrics that actually mean something. Choose Alphabetic mode for English-style keyboards or CJK keystrokes mode for Japanese, Korean or Chinese typing through an IME — each language gets the metric typing professionals in that language actually use.
Choosing an input method
A keyboard's "speed" only makes sense relative to how you count what comes out of it.
- Alphabetic (Latin-script) — one key press generally produces one displayed character. The classic typing-test metric WPM (words per minute) uses a fixed convention of 1 word = 5 characters, and CPM (characters per minute) counts characters directly. Use this mode for English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, etc.
- CJK keystrokes — Japanese, Korean and Chinese are typed through an Input Method Editor (IME). One displayed character usually requires 2–3 key presses (e.g. typing
kyouto produce今日). Counting characters here would punish you for the script rather than measure your hand speed, so the industry standard is KPM (keystrokes per minute).

How the metrics are defined
The typing industry standardized on 1 word = 5 characters so that scores are comparable regardless of the text typed. A passage full of short words would otherwise inflate WPM for the same effort.

What does WPM mean in typing?
WPM stands for "words per minute." In typing tests, one "word" is standardized as exactly 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation). This convention is used by all major typing tests — TypeRacer, 10FastFingers, Keybr — so that scores are comparable regardless of the actual words typed. To convert from characters per minute (CPM) to WPM, divide CPM by 5.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM is your raw speed before any error penalty — it counts every character you typed, correct or not. Net WPM subtracts one WPM for each uncorrected error per minute: Net WPM = Gross WPM − (errors / minutes). Net WPM is the standard reported speed in competitive typing because it reflects both speed and accuracy. A typist who types 80 WPM gross but makes 10 errors in 2 minutes has a net WPM of 75.
What is the difference between KPM and CPM?
CPM (characters per minute) counts the characters that appear on screen. KPM (keystrokes per minute) counts every key press you made. For English typing the two are nearly identical, so CPM is the usual figure.
For Japanese, Korean, and Chinese typing through an IME each displayed character typically requires 2–3 keystrokes (for example "kyou" → "今日"), so KPM is the fair benchmark of raw hand speed and is the metric most CJK typing trainers report.
When should I use the CJK keystroke mode?
Use CJK mode whenever you are typing Japanese, Korean, or Chinese through an Input Method Editor (IME). In that mode the calculator asks for the number of keys you pressed (not the number of characters that appeared), and reports your KPM. Word and character metrics (WPM / CPM) are hidden because the 5-character-per-word convention does not translate to languages where one character is already a whole word.
What is a good typing speed?
Average computer users type around 40 WPM. Professional typists and office workers typically reach 65–75 WPM. Speeds above 80 WPM are considered fast, and competitive typists regularly exceed 100–120 WPM. For most office work, 50–60 WPM with high accuracy is sufficient. The accuracy percentage matters as much as raw speed: consistent 99 % accuracy at 60 WPM is more productive than 80 WPM with 90 % accuracy.
How is typing accuracy calculated?
Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly: Accuracy = (1 − errors / total characters) × 100. For example, 3 errors in 500 characters gives (1 − 3/500) × 100 = 99.4 % accuracy. Most typing tests count each uncorrected error as one mistake — backspacing and retyping the correct character means the error was fixed and does not count toward the error total.
