The picture hanging height is the position on the wall at which a hook or nail is set so that the centre of a framed artwork rests at a chosen eye level. This calculator returns that hook height from the frame height, the wire drop, and the target centre height, so the artwork lands where intended on the first attempt.

The eye-level convention

Museums and galleries hang work so that its centre sits about 145 cm57 in above the floor. This figure approximates the average eye level of a standing adult, and applying it uniformly gives a wall a settled, deliberate look: large and small frames share a common horizontal centre line rather than being aligned by their tops or bottoms. The target is a centre height, not a top or hook height, which is why the frame's own dimensions enter the calculation.

The centre of a frame lies half its height below the top edge. To put that centre at the target level cc, the top of the frame must rise above cc by half the frame height hh:
