Drip Irrigation Run Time

A drip irrigation run time calculator turns the hardware on your zone — the number of emitters and their flow rating — into a watering schedule. Enter how many emitters are running, the litres-per-hour each one delivers, and how much water each plant should receive, and it returns the run time, the combined flow the zone draws from your supply, and the total water used per cycle. How drip run time is calculated

Drip emitters deliver water at a steady, rated flow, so the time to apply a given volume is simply the volume divided by the flow rate:

Here $V_p$ is the water each plant should receive, $q$ is the flow rating of one emitter, $n$ is the number of emitters, and $Q$ is the total flow the zone draws. Because every emitter on a zone runs for the same length of time, the run time depends only on a single emitter's flow and the per-plant target — adding more emitters waters more plants at once but does not change how long the zone must run.

Worked example

Suppose a raised bed has 20 emitters rated at 4 litres per hour, and each plant should get 8 litres per watering:

The zone runs for two hours, pulls 80 litres per hour while it runs, and uses 160 litres for the full cycle. The flow figure matters because a hose bib or pump that supplies less than 80 L/h cannot run all 20 emitters at their rating at once — in that case the bed would be split into smaller zones.

Choosing the water-per-plant target

The right per-plant volume depends on plant size, soil, mulch, and weather, and it is best confirmed by checking soil moisture at root depth. Water deeply enough to wet the whole root zone, then let the top of the soil dry before the next cycle; this encourages deeper roots than frequent shallow watering. Drip irrigation places water slowly and directly at the root zone, so very little is lost to evaporation or runoff. That efficiency is why drip systems typically use far less water than sprinklers for the same planting, while still keeping the root zone evenly moist.
