Roof Shingle Bundles

Roofers buy and price material by the square, where one square covers 100 square feet of finished roof. Working out how many squares a roof has — and then how many bundles of shingles that takes — is the first step in ordering material without coming up short or paying for a pallet of leftovers.

Roof Area to Squares

A square is simply 100 ft² of roof surface, so the number of squares is the surface area in square feet divided by 100, multiplied by a waste allowance for cuts and overlaps:

The area $A$ here is the actual sloped surface of the roof, not the building footprint. A pitched roof has more surface than the floor it sits over, so the footprint is multiplied by a pitch multiplier before it goes into the formula (see below).

A roof surface of 186 m² is about 2002 ft², or 20.0 squares; with a 10% waste allowance that becomes 20.0 × 1.1 ≈ 22 squares.A roof surface of 2000 ft² is 20.0 squares; with a 10% waste allowance that becomes 20.0 × 1.1 = 22 squares.

Squares to Bundles

Shingles are packaged in bundles, and architectural (laminated) shingles are typically three bundles to the square. The bundle count is the squares multiplied by bundles per square, rounded up, since bundles cannot be split:

For the 22-square roof above at 3 bundles per square, that is ⌈22 × 3⌉ = 66 bundles. Heavier premium shingles can run four or five bundles per square, so the figure printed on the bundle wrapper should always be checked against the default of 3.

The Pitch Multiplier

A steeper roof has more surface area for the same footprint, and that extra area needs extra shingles. The footprint is converted to surface area with a multiplier that depends on the pitch — the rise in inches over a 12-inch run. A 4/12 pitch has a multiplier of about 1.054, a 6/12 about 1.118, and a 12/12 (45°) about 1.414. Choosing a Waste Allowance

A simple gable roof with two clean planes wastes little material, so 10% is a sound allowance. Roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, or many vents and chimneys generate more offcuts, and 12–15% is safer there. The waste also covers the starter course along the eaves and the ridge cap, both of which are cut from or substitute for field shingles.
