How the growth-fraction model works

A puppy's weight at any given age is approximately a fixed fraction of its eventual adult weight. Different breed size categories reach physical maturity at different ages: small breeds (adult weight up to roughly 10 kg / 22 lb) mature by about 12 months, medium breeds by 15 months, large breeds by 18 months, and giant breeds by 24 months.

The cap at 0.99 prevents the formula from implying the puppy has already surpassed adult size, which can happen if an older pup has been measured slightly heavier than expected.

Worked example

A Labrador Retriever puppy (large breed) weighs 20 kg at 9 months. Using a maturity age of 18 months:

The puppy has approximately 20 kg still to gain before reaching full adult size. These are estimates — individual genetics, nutrition, and health affect the actual outcome.

Limitations

This model assumes linear growth toward a fixed endpoint, which is a reasonable first approximation but not a precise biological model. Mixed-breed dogs, atypically large or small individuals, and puppies with unusual early health histories will show larger deviations. For a more reliable projection, a veterinarian can assess paw size, body condition score, and pedigree to refine the estimate.

For dogs that have already passed their expected maturity age, the cap at 0.99 means the adult weight estimate will closely match the current weight, which is reasonable.
