Plant Spacing

The number of plants a bed needs comes from three things: the area of the bed, the on-center spacing recommended for the plant, and the pattern the plants are arranged in. On-center spacing is the distance from the center of one plant to the center of the next, which is the figure printed on most plant tags.

The area per plant method

Each plant claims a small patch of ground. On a square grid that patch is the spacing squared. Dividing the bed area by the area per plant gives the count:

Square vs triangular layouts

A triangular, or staggered, layout shifts every other row by half the spacing so each plant tucks into the gap between two plants in the next row. Neighbors stay the same center-to-center distance apart, but the rows sit closer together. Each plant then occupies the spacing squared times the sine of sixty degrees, about 0.866 of the square-grid patch, so roughly 15% more plants fit:

Practical notes

These figures assume a clean rectangle with plants right to the edge.
