Why cost per serving matters
A recipe's total cost tells you what a single batch drains from the grocery budget, but the number that actually helps you plan is the cost per serving. It puts a home-cooked meal on the same footing as a takeout order or a restaurant plate, so you can see at a glance whether cooking a dish is worth it and how it compares to alternatives.
This calculator does two things: it sums the cost of each ingredient into a batch total, then divides that total by the number of servings.

Enter the cost of the amount used in the recipe, not the price of a whole package. Any row left at zero is ignored, so a three-ingredient recipe simply uses three rows.
The math

Worked example
Suppose you are making a pot of chili that serves four. The ingredients used cost:
- Ground beef: $4
- Canned tomatoes and beans: $3
- Onion, spices, and oil: $2
Total cost = $4 + $3 + $2 = $9.
Cost per serving = $9 ÷ 4 = $2.25.
So each bowl of chili costs $2.25 in ingredients — a useful figure to compare against the $8–$12 a similar bowl might cost at a restaurant.
Pricing part of a package
Most ingredients are bought in packages larger than a single recipe needs. To find the cost of the portion used, divide the package price by how many recipe-sized portions it holds, then multiply by the number used.
For a carton of twelve eggs where the recipe needs three: take the carton price, divide by twelve, and multiply by three. For items sold by weight, divide the package price by its weight to get a price per unit weight, then multiply by the weight the recipe calls for.
Lowering the cost per serving
Because cost per serving is the total divided by servings, it falls when the batch gets cheaper or yields more portions:
- Cook a bigger batch to spread staple costs across more servings.
- Substitute a cheaper protein or buy staples in bulk to cut the total.
- Trim an expensive garnish that adds little to the dish.

What the estimate leaves out
This figure covers ingredients only. It does not include energy for cooking, equipment, packaging, or your time. For meal planning at home those are usually fixed, so the ingredient cost per serving is the number that varies from dish to dish — but if you are pricing food to sell, add those overheads separately.

What should I enter for each ingredient cost?
Enter the cost of the amount actually used in the recipe, not the price of the full package. If a bag of flour costs a certain amount and the recipe uses a quarter of it, enter a quarter of the bag price.
Combine similar items where it is easier: several pantry staples used in small amounts can be grouped into one row so the six rows cover an entire dish. Any rows left at zero are simply ignored in the total.
