Pond Fish Stocking

A pond fish stocking calculator estimates how many fish a garden pond can comfortably hold. Enter the pond's water volume and the type of fish, and it returns the maximum number of adult fish based on common per-fish volume guidance. It helps anyone planning a new pond or adding to an existing one avoid overstocking, which is the most common cause of poor water quality and fish losses.

How stocking is calculated

The simplest reliable guide ties the number of fish to the water volume, because water is what dilutes their waste and carries their oxygen. Each type of fish has a recommended volume per adult, and the pond's capacity is the volume divided by that figure:

where $N$ is the number of fish, $V$ the pond volume, and $v$ the water per fish — about 150 litres for a goldfish, 1000 litres for a koi, and 40 litres for a small fish such as a minnow. The floor rounds down because a partial allowance is not enough for another full-grown fish. The guideline is based on the fish's adult size, not the small juveniles you often start with.

Worked example

A 5 m³ pond — that is 5000 litres — stocked with goldfish:

So the pond could hold about 33 adult goldfish. The same pond would suit only about five koi, because each koi needs roughly seven times the water. Stocking somewhat below the limit is wise, since it leaves a margin for hot weather when the water holds less oxygen.

What changes the limit

Volume sets the baseline, but depth, filtration, aeration, and planting all shift it. A deep, well-filtered, aerated pond can carry more fish than its volume alone suggests, while a shallow, still pond carries fewer.
