Towing Payload
A vehicle's towing capacity is not a single number you can read off a sticker and call it done. Two separate limits apply simultaneously, and exceeding either one makes towing unsafe regardless of what the other shows.
The two limits that govern safe towing
Payload capacity is the weight budget inside the tow vehicle — everyone in the cab, everything in the bed, and the downward force the trailer pushes onto the hitch ball. It equals the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) minus the curb weight. For example, a truck with a GVWR of 3,000 kg and a curb weight of 2,300 kg has a payload capacity of 700 kg. Fill it with passengers and gear first, and whatever remains is what the tongue weight must fit inside.
Towing margin is derived from the GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating), which caps the total mass of the vehicle plus the loaded trailer together. The effective tow limit for any given trip equals GCWR minus the vehicle's curb weight minus the weight of occupants and cargo. Load more people or bags and the effective tow limit shrinks accordingly.
Tongue weight
The tongue weight — the downward push at the hitch — consumes part of the payload budget. A common guideline is 10–15% of the loaded trailer weight; this calculator uses 12% as the midpoint. Too little tongue weight allows the trailer to sway; too much overloads the rear axle and lightens the steering.
Worked example
A mid-size SUV has GVWR 3,000 kg, curb weight 2,300 kg, and GCWR 5,400 kg. The family loads 250 kg of occupants and luggage and hitches a 1,600 kg camper.
Both margins are positive, so the rig is within limits. If the family added another 400 kg of cargo, the remaining payload would drop to −142 kg — over the payload limit even though the GCWR headroom is still comfortable.
Limitations
The 12% tongue-weight figure is a guideline, not a law. Weight-distributing hitches redistribute tongue weight across all axles and can change the arithmetic. The ratings you enter must come from your vehicle's door-jamb sticker and owner's manual — not from online databases, which may reflect a different configuration. Actual safe towing also depends on tire load ratings, trailer brake capacity, and road grade.

What is the GVWR and where do I find it?
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum total weight your vehicle is designed to carry — including itself, fuel, passengers, cargo, and tongue weight from a trailer. Exceeding it stresses brakes, tires, and suspension beyond their design limits and can void your warranty. You'll find the GVWR on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, often labelled "Tire and Loading Information."
What is the GCWR and how is it different from the towing capacity?
The Gross Combined Weight Rating is the maximum total weight of the tow vehicle plus the fully loaded trailer. The towing capacity figure advertised by manufacturers is usually derived by subtracting the vehicle's base curb weight from the GCWR, assuming a solo driver.
Your effective tow limit shrinks whenever the vehicle is heavier than its base spec — more passengers, more cargo, or accessories added after the sale. This calculator uses the GCWR directly so it reflects your actual situation.
Why is tongue weight estimated at 12%?
The SAE J684 standard and most towing guides recommend keeping tongue weight between 10% and 15% of the loaded trailer weight for conventional hitches.
At 10% the tongue is too light, which allows the trailer to sway; above 15% the rear axle is overloaded and steering becomes light. This calculator uses 12% as the midpoint estimate. If you have a weight-distributing hitch, some of that tongue weight is redistributed to all axles — consult your hitch manufacturer for its rated capacity and adjustment guidelines.
Can I tow up to the towing capacity if my truck is fully loaded?
Not necessarily. Payload capacity and towing capacity are separate limits and you must respect both simultaneously.
A fully loaded crew-cab pickup with five adults and a bed full of gear may have less than half its advertised payload capacity remaining before you even hook up a trailer. The GCWR check in this calculator catches the towing side; the remaining-payload check catches the payload side. You need headroom in both to tow safely and legally.
What should I do if the calculator says I am over the limit?
Reduce the load until both margins are positive. The most common adjustments are: leave passengers or cargo behind; use a lighter trailer or reduce what is loaded in it; or switch to a heavier-duty tow vehicle with a higher GVWR or GCWR.
Exceeding either rating is unsafe and in many jurisdictions creates legal liability if an accident occurs. The figures in this calculator are estimates — always cross-check against the stickers in your vehicle and your owner's manual.
