To plan a project you compare the total length the project requires against the length in a single skein, then round up to the next whole skein.

The yardage divided by skein length method

Each project type carries a typical total length, based on average adult or standard sizing. Dividing that total by the length per skein gives the number of skeins, rounded up so you never run short partway through:
