Length Contraction

Length contraction is a consequence of Einstein's special theory of relativity: an object moving relative to an observer is measured to be shorter along its direction of motion than it is in its own rest frame. At ordinary speeds the effect is immeasurably small, but as the velocity approaches the speed of light $c \approx 3 \times 10^8\ \text{m/s}$ it becomes dramatic.

This calculator takes a proper length $L_0$ (the length in the object's rest frame) and a velocity $v$, and returns the Lorentz factor $\gamma$ and the contracted length $L$ measured by a stationary observer.

How length contraction works

The speed of light is the same for every observer, regardless of their motion. To keep that constant while clocks run at different rates, space itself must measure differently between frames. An object flying past at high speed is measured shorter in the direction it travels — not because it is squeezed, but because simultaneity and distance are frame-dependent in relativity.

Only the dimension along the motion shrinks. Width and height, perpendicular to the velocity, are unaffected.

Formula

As $v \to 0$, $\gamma \to 1$ and $L \to L_0$. As $v \to c$, $\gamma \to \infty$ and $L \to 0$.

Worked example

A rod with a proper length of $L_0 = 100\ \text{m}$ moves at v = 0.6c.

Real-world relevance

Length contraction explains how cosmic-ray muons reach the ground. Created high in the atmosphere, a muon's short lifetime should let it travel only a few hundred metres before decaying. Yet many reach sea level. In the muon's frame the atmosphere is length-contracted to a fraction of its rest thickness, so the journey is short enough to complete — the same outcome a ground observer attributes to time dilation. Particle accelerators rely on the same physics: bunches of near-light-speed particles are contracted along the beam direction.

Limitation: this calculator covers special relativity only

The formula here applies to inertial (non-accelerating) frames in flat spacetime. Near very massive objects, general relativity adds further geometric effects. For kinematics and particle physics the special-relativistic result is sufficient.
