How Long Does Light Take?

Light is fast, but space is vast. The time it takes light to cross a distance is one of the most useful quantities in astronomy because it sets a hard limit on how quickly anything — light, radio, any signal at all — can travel. The relationship is simply distance divided by speed:

where $c = 299{,}792{,}458\ \text{m/s}$ is the speed of light in a vacuum.

Light-Years Are Distances

A common source of confusion is that a light-year sounds like a time but is actually a distance — the distance light travels in one year, about 9.46 trillion kilometres. By construction, then, light takes exactly one year to cross one light-year. The same idea gives the light-second (300,000 km) and the light-minute (18 million km), handy units for describing the scale of the Solar System.

Worked Examples

Sunlight to Earth. The Sun lies one astronomical unit away, 149.6 million km:

$t = \frac{1.496 \times 10^{11}}{2.998 \times 10^8} \approx 499\ \text{s} \approx 8\ \text{min}\ 19\ \text{s}$

So the sunlight warming your face left the Sun's surface more than eight minutes ago.

The nearest star. Alpha Centauri is 4.24 light-years away, so its light has been travelling for 4.24 years. A radio message sent there and back would take over eight years for the round trip.

Telescopes as Time Machines

Because light always arrives late, every astronomical observation is a glimpse of the past. We see the Moon as it was about 1.3 seconds ago, the planets minutes to hours ago, and nearby stars years ago. Look deep enough and the delay stretches to billions of years: the most distant galaxies appear as they were when the universe was young, long before the Sun and Earth formed. This is why peering farther into space is literally peering further back in time — and why light travel time is inseparable from the study of cosmic history.
