Planning Drinks for a Party

The hardest part of hosting is buying the right amount of alcohol: too little and the bar runs dry, too much and the closet fills with warm leftovers. A simple planning rule cuts through the guesswork — count on roughly one drink per guest per hour, with a small bump early in the evening when guests arrive sociable and thirsty.

The Planning Rule

Total drinks follow directly from three numbers:

where $g$ is the guest count, $h$ is the length of the event in hours, and $r$ is the drinks per guest per hour. A default rate of 1.2 drinks per guest per hour folds in the busier first hour. The total is then divided among the beverages by share.

Splitting by Beverage Type

A common split is 40% wine, 40% beer, and 20% spirits, but it shifts with the crowd and the occasion. Once each share is known, the count converts to purchasable units using standard bottle yields:

So wine bottles are the wine drinks divided by five, spirits bottles are the spirit drinks divided by sixteen, and beers map one to one. Each result rounds up, because a store sells whole bottles.

Worked Example

For 20 guests over a 4-hour evening at 1.2 drinks per hour, the total is $20 \times 4 \times 1.2 = 96$ drinks. With a 40/40/20 split that is about 38 wine drinks (8 bottles), 38 beers (39 cans), and 19 spirit drinks (2 bottles). Rounding every count up leaves a comfortable buffer.

It is always safer to round up and to keep generous non-alcoholic options on hand — sparkling water, soft drinks, and mocktails for designated drivers and guests who are not drinking. Stock about one pound of ice per guest, plus mixers and citrus for any cocktails.
