How Bright Is a Star?

A star's luminosity is the total power it pours into space every second — its intrinsic energy output, set entirely by the star itself rather than by where we happen to stand. If we treat a star as a blackbody sphere, two numbers determine that output: its size and its surface temperature. The Stefan–Boltzmann law combines them:

$L = 4\pi R^2 \sigma T^4$

Here $4\pi R^2$ is the surface area of the star, and $\sigma T^4$ is the power radiated per unit area, with $\sigma = 5.67 \times 10^{-8}\ \text{W·m}^{-2}\text{K}^{-4}$ the Stefan–Boltzmann constant.

Worked Example

Confirm the Sun's luminosity from its radius (1 R☉) and surface temperature (5,772 K):

This is the definition of the solar luminosity, so the calculation comes out to one solar luminosity, as expected.

Why Temperature Wins

The two factors do not contribute equally. Luminosity rises with the square of the radius but with the fourth power of the temperature. Double a star's radius and it becomes four times brighter; double its temperature and it becomes sixteen times brighter. This is why the hottest stars — blue-white O and B types at tens of thousands of kelvin — are so spectacularly luminous, while cool red dwarfs, despite being numerous, emit only a small fraction of the Sun's light.

The same law explains red giants. As a Sun-like star ages, its core contracts and its envelope swells enormously. Even though the surface cools, the radius grows so much that the $R^2$ term wins overall, and the star can become hundreds of times more luminous than it was on the main sequence.

Luminosity Versus Apparent Brightness

It is important to distinguish luminosity from how bright a star looks in our sky. Apparent brightness falls off with the square of distance, so a hugely luminous but distant star can appear fainter than a modest but nearby one. Bridging the two — turning how bright something looks into how far away it is — is exactly what the distance modulus does.
