When Two Worlds Line Up

Watch Mars over several years and you will notice it comes especially close and bright at regular intervals. Each of these meetings is an alignment of Earth and Mars with the Sun. The time between successive identical alignments is the synodic period — distinct from the orbital period, which is simply the time a body takes to go once around the Sun.

The two differ because both worlds are moving. By the time the faster inner body completes one orbit, the slower outer body has moved ahead, so the inner body must travel a little extra to catch up. For two bodies orbiting the same way, the synodic period $S$ follows from the difference of their orbital rates:

$\frac{1}{S} = \frac{1}{P_1} - \frac{1}{P_2}$

where $P_1$ is the shorter (inner) period and $P_2$ the longer (outer) one. Rearranged:

$S = \frac{P_1 P_2}{P_2 - P_1}$

Worked Example

Earth orbits in 1 year and Mars in 1.881 years:

$S = \frac{1 \times 1.881}{1.881 - 1} = \frac{1.881}{0.881} \approx 2.14\ \text{years} \approx 780\ \text{days}$

This is why Mars reaches opposition — its closest, brightest appearance — about every 26 months, and why mission planners get a Mars launch window only on roughly the same cadence.

Synodic Versus Sidereal

The distinction shows up close to home with the Moon. Its sidereal period, one orbit relative to the stars, is 27.3 days. But the synodic period — from one full moon to the next — is 29.5 days. The extra two days are the time the Moon needs to catch up with the Sun's own apparent eastward drift and return to the same phase. The synodic month is what governs the calendar and the cycle of phases we actually see.

A Counterintuitive Rule

Notice what happens as two orbits become similar in size: the denominator $P_2 - P_1$ shrinks, and the synodic period grows very large. Two planets on nearly identical orbits would align only rarely, because the inner one gains on the outer one agonisingly slowly. Conversely, when one body orbits much faster than the other, the synodic period approaches the inner body's own period — it laps the slow outer body almost once per orbit.
