The distance between a sofa and a TV shapes how immersive and comfortable the viewing experience feels. Sit too close and the eye strains to take in the full frame; sit too far and fine detail is wasted. Two professional standards — from THX and SMPTE — define where the comfortable zone begins and ends, each rooted in viewing angle geometry.
Viewing angle standards
THX recommends that the screen fill at least 40° of the viewer's horizontal field of vision for a cinematic feel. SMPTE, the professional broadcast and cinema organisation, uses 30° as its reference angle for a comfortable home-style seat. Both standards treat the screen's diagonal as the primary size measure.
Converting these angles to a distance multiplier gives the rule of thumb: the viewing distance is roughly proportional to the screen diagonal. For a 1080p panel the comfortable range runs from about 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal; for 4K, the zone shifts closer because smaller pixels can be resolved from a shorter distance without becoming individually visible.
How resolution changes the math
A 4K panel has twice the horizontal and vertical pixel count of a 1080p panel at the same diagonal, making each pixel half the linear size. The human eye's resolving limit — roughly one arcminute of arc — determines how close a viewer must sit before pixels become distinguishable. Because 4K pixels are smaller, they remain below that threshold at shorter distances. The same logic extends to 8K, compressing the zone closer still.

These multipliers treat the diagonal as the sole input, which is a simplification. Aspect ratio matters: a 16:9 panel and a 21:9 ultrawide of the same diagonal present different widths and therefore different angles at a given distance. Room layout, sofa placement, and ambient light also play a role that no formula captures.
A useful cross-check when choosing a screen size is to work backwards from the fixed seating distance in the room. If the sofa is 2.5 m from the wall, a 4K TV with an optimal distance of 2.5 m has a diagonal of roughly 2.5 ÷ 1.3 = 1.92 m, or about 75 inches.

The eye cannot distinguish individual pixels from a greater distance, which shifts the comfortable minimum closer. On a 55-inch screen, a 1080p minimum is about 2.1 m, while a 4K minimum is roughly 1.4 m. Sitting closer on a 4K set also makes the resolution advantage more perceptible, since the eye is better placed to resolve the finer detail.
What is the THX viewing-angle recommendation?
THX recommends a 40° horizontal field of view as the minimum for a cinematic experience — the screen should fill at least that angle of the viewer's vision.
