Body Frame Size

Body frame size describes the underlying breadth of the skeleton — small, medium, or large — independent of how much muscle or fat a person carries. It is estimated from the ratio of height to wrist circumference, a method long used in nutrition tables to adjust ideal-weight ranges for build. Because the wrist holds little fat or muscle, its girth relative to height stands in for skeletal width.

What frame size measures

Two people of the same height and weight can have quite different builds: one fine-boned, the other broad. Frame size captures that difference. A broad-built person has heavier bones and more supporting tissue, so a healthy weight for them sits higher than for a fine-built person of the same height. Ideal-weight charts are drawn around a medium frame, so knowing whether a build is small, medium, or large tells which part of the range applies.

The ratio and the cut-offs

The estimate uses a single number: height divided by wrist circumference, both in the same unit, so the result is a pure ratio.

Here $h$ is height and $\mathrm{WR}$ is wrist circumference. A thinner wrist for a given height produces a larger ratio and a smaller frame; a broader wrist produces a smaller ratio and a larger frame. The ratio is read against sex-specific cut-offs, because women carry a finer wrist relative to height than men on average:

Worked example

Consider a man with a height of 175 cm69 in and a wrist circumference of 17 cm6.7 in. Dividing the two:

A ratio near 10.3 falls in the 9.6-to-10.4 band for men, so this build is a medium frame. The same arithmetic holds in inches, since both measurements share a unit and the ratio is unitless.

Measuring the wrist

The wrist is measured on the writing hand, around the joint just past the bony bump on the outer wrist — the styloid process — toward the hand. The tape should lie snug against the skin without pressing in. Measuring at the same spot each time keeps comparisons consistent, and using the same unit for both wrist and height is essential, since the method depends on their ratio rather than either figure alone.

Using frame size

Frame size is most useful as an adjustment to a healthy-weight target. A large frame shifts the target toward the upper end of a medium-frame range, and a small frame toward the lower end.
