Ovulation Prediction
The ovulation predictor estimates the day of ovulation and the surrounding fertile window from three pieces of calendar information: the first day of the most recent menstrual period, the average cycle length, and the length of the luteal phase. It is used by people who are tracking fertility to plan or understand conception, and by anyone wanting to anticipate the timing of an upcoming period. Because it relies only on cycle dates, it works as a planning aid rather than a clinical diagnosis.
How ovulation timing is estimated
A menstrual cycle has two phases separated by ovulation. The follicular phase runs from the first day of the period until ovulation; the luteal phase runs from ovulation until the next period begins. The luteal phase is governed by the lifespan of the corpus luteum and is relatively constant, usually 12 to 14 days. Almost all of the variation in total cycle length comes from the follicular phase.
For that reason, ovulation is estimated by counting backward from the expected next period rather than forward from the last one. Equivalently, it is placed a fixed number of days after the period starts:

The fertile window
Conception is possible on more than just the day of ovulation. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days, and a released egg remains viable for about 24 hours. The fertile window therefore spans the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself:

Consider a last menstrual period beginning on 3 March 2026, an average cycle length of 31 days, and a luteal phase of 13 days. Ovulation is estimated as
The fertile window then runs from 16 March to 22 March, and the next period is expected around 3 April (LMP + 31 days). A couple aiming to conceive would focus on the days from roughly 19 to 21 March, just before ovulation.
How cycle length changes the result
Because the luteal phase is held fixed, a longer cycle pushes ovulation later and a shorter cycle pulls it earlier. With a 14-day luteal phase, a 24-day cycle places ovulation on day 10, a 28-day cycle on day 14, and a 35-day cycle on day 21. The fertile window and the predicted next period shift by the same amount.

Limitations
The estimate assumes regular cycles and a constant luteal phase. Real cycles vary from month to month, and ovulation can occur earlier or later than predicted, especially with irregular periods, recent contraceptive use, or conditions that affect ovulation. Calendar-based prediction does not detect ovulation directly; methods such as basal body temperature tracking, cervical mucus observation, or ovulation test kits provide more direct evidence. The calculator should not be relied on as a contraceptive method, since it cannot reliably identify days on which conception is impossible.
