Baseboard and Trim

Baseboard, also called skirting, is the trim that runs along the base of a wall where it meets the floor, and the amount a room needs is set by its perimeter, the width of any doorways, and a waste allowance for cutting. This calculator estimates the running length of trim to buy and converts it into the number of stock boards.

The perimeter-minus-openings method

Baseboard follows every wall, so the starting quantity is the room perimeter β€” twice the sum of the length and width:

Trim stops at each doorway and open threshold, so the combined width of those openings is subtracted. A waste allowance is then added for mitre cuts and offcuts, most of which cannot be reused:

where dd is the total doorway width and kk is the waste fraction. Dividing by the board length ss and rounding up to a whole board gives the number to buy:

Consider a 4.2 Γ— 3.1 m room with a single 0.9 m doorway, trimmed with 2.4 m boards and a 10% waste allowance:

Choosing inputs

The waste allowance is the input most worth adjusting. Each mitred corner leaves a short offcut, so rooms with many corners, alcoves, or returns favour 15% over the usual 10%. Subtract only the clear opening width of a doorway, not the casing, since the casing carries no baseboard. Because boards are sold in fixed lengths, the final count is always rounded up to the next whole board.
