Gutter and Downspout

A gutter and downspout calculator turns a roof's plan area and the local rainfall intensity into a drainage plan: how many downspouts the roof needs and which K-style gutter size to fit. It follows SMACNA rules of thumb, the same rough sizing that residential guttering is usually specified from, so a homeowner or installer can check that a new run has enough capacity before ordering material.

What drives gutter sizing

Two things set how much water a roof sheds in a storm: the area draining to the gutters and how hard it rains. The relevant area is the plan area — the flat footprint the roof covers seen from above — not the longer sloped surface, because rain falls vertically. Rainfall is measured as an intensity, the depth that would accumulate in an hour if the rate held, in inches per hour (5 in/hr is about 125 mm/hr).

Drainage is sized for a short, violent burst rather than a yearly average, so the figure to use is the 100-year, 5-minute rainfall rate for the location, read from a published intensity table or the local code. Much of the United States falls between 4 and 7 in/hr, with the Gulf Coast and tropical regions higher.

How the calculator works

Published sizing tables assume a 5 in/hr design storm. To reuse them at any other intensity, the roof area is rescaled to an equivalent area at 5 in/hr:

where $A$ is the roof area, $i$ is the rainfall intensity, and $A_e$ is the drainage-equivalent area. At 5 in/hr the two are equal; heavier rain inflates the effective area in proportion.

A standard 2x3 in downspout clears about 600 ft² of roof at the design storm — the rule of one square inch of downspout cross-section per 100 ft² of roof, applied to a 2x3's roughly 6 in². The count rounds up so total capacity always covers the effective area:

The gutter size steps up with the effective area: 5-inch K-style up to about 2500 ft², 6-inch from there to roughly 4000 ft², and 7-inch or separate gutter runs beyond that.

Worked example

Take a 1200 ft² roof in a region with a 5 in/hr design rainfall. The effective area is $1200 \times 5/5 = 1200$ ft². Dividing by the 600 ft² a downspout clears gives exactly 2, so the roof needs two standard 2x3 in downspouts, and at 1200 ft² a 5-inch K-style gutter carries it comfortably.

Move the same roof to a wetter climate at 10 in/hr and the effective area doubles to 2400 ft², calling for four downspouts. This is why identical houses are guttered differently across regions: the roof has not changed, but the storm it must drain has.

Reading the result

The downspout count is a minimum from capacity alone; spacing matters too, so also aim for a downspout every 30 to 40 feet of gutter run and one near each low corner. Fewer, larger 3x4 in downspouts each clear about twice the area, so two of them stand in for roughly four of the smaller size. Treat the numbers as a starting point for typical homes — actual capacity also depends on gutter slope, outlet type, and how often debris is cleared.
