A drywall estimate comes down to three numbers: how many gypsum board sheets cover the surface, how much joint compound finishes the seams, and how many screws hold everything to the framing. Each follows from the total area you measure and the sheet size you choose.

Sheets from area

The area each sheet covers is what matters. A standard sheet is 1.2 m × 2.4 m, covering 2.88 m²4 ft × 8 ft, covering 32 sq ft; larger panels cover more but are heavier to handle.

To find the sheet count, divide the area by the coverage of one sheet, scale up by the waste allowance, and round up to a whole panel:

Longer sheets cover more per panel and leave fewer seams to tape, but they are heavier and harder to manoeuvre in tight rooms.

Joint compound and screws

Two simple rates round out the estimate. Ready-mix joint compound for a standard tape-and-finish runs at roughly 0.49 kg1.1 lb per unit of board area across the taping and finishing coats. Screws are placed on a regular grid along studs and plates, which works out to about 32 screws per sheet.

Worked example

A room with 50 m²540 sq ft of wall to cover, using standard sheets and a 10% waste allowance:

  • sheets = ⌈ 50 × 1.10 ÷ 2.88 ⌉ = ⌈ 19.10 ⌉ = 19
  • screws = 19 × 32 = 608
  • joint compound = 50 × 0.49 = 24.5 kg

So the job needs 19 sheets, about 24 kg of compound, and roughly 608 screws.

Choosing a waste allowance

The waste allowance covers off-cuts, breakage, and pieces too small to reuse. Around 10% suits a plain rectangular room. Rooms with many corners, sloped ceilings, or lots of door and window openings produce more scrap, so 15% to 20% is safer. A spare sheet on hand is usually cheaper than a second trip to the supplier partway through the job.
