Subfloor Sheets

A subfloor is sheathed in panels of plywood or OSB laid over the joists, and the number of sheets follows from the floor area and the size of one sheet, plus a waste allowance for the cuts at the walls and the staggered seams. This calculator works out the sheet count.

Area divided by sheet

The floor area is length times width, and the sheet count is that area, padded by a waste fraction, divided by the area one sheet covers and rounded up to whole sheets:

where $a$ is the coverage of one sheet and $k$ is the waste fraction. A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, about 2.97 m².

Worked example

Consider a 6 × 5 m floor sheathed with 4 × 8 ft sheets covering 2.97 m² each, with a 10% waste allowance:

So the floor needs about 12 sheets.

Consider a 20 × 16 ft floor sheathed with 4 × 8 ft sheets covering 32 sq ft each, with a 10% waste allowance:

So the floor needs about 11 sheets.

Choosing inputs

Use the coverage of the sheet you are buying — most subfloor is 4 × 8 ft and tongue-and-groove, but 4 × 4 ft panels are sold for tighter spaces. The waste allowance reflects how the seams are staggered so they do not line up across joists, which leaves offcuts; a square room manages on 10%, while a complex outline or many openings favours 15%. The count rounds up to whole sheets, since you cannot buy a fraction.
