Golf Course Handicap

A Course Handicap is the number of strokes a golfer receives on one particular set of tees, calculated from their portable Handicap Index. This calculator applies the World Handicap System formula to convert an index into a course handicap using the slope rating, course rating and par printed on the scorecard, and it can also apply a handicap allowance to give the Playing Handicap used in competition. It answers the question every player asks on the first tee: how many shots do I get here?

Index versus course handicap

The Handicap Index is a single number that reflects a player's demonstrated ability and travels with them from course to course. It is deliberately abstract, because a raw index does not tell you how many strokes to take on a given day. Courses differ in difficulty, and a tougher layout should hand out more strokes for the same ability. The Course Handicap performs that translation, turning the portable index into the concrete strokes received on the tees actually being played.

The formula

The World Handicap System defines the conversion as

rounded to the nearest whole number. The slope term scales the index by how hard the course plays for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer, with 113 being the slope of a course of standard difficulty. The second term, course rating minus par, adjusts for tees whose expected scratch score is higher or lower than their nominal par. Together they ensure the strokes received match the real difficulty of the tees rather than a fixed assumption.

Playing handicap and allowances

Many competitions apply a handicap allowance, a percentage of the course handicap chosen to keep a mixed field fair. Singles stroke play often uses 95%, while other formats publish their own figures. The Playing Handicap is simply the course handicap multiplied by that allowance and rounded:

For a casual round there is no allowance, so the playing handicap equals the course handicap.

Worked example

Suppose a player carries a Handicap Index of 10.4 and plays a set of tees with a slope rating of 132, a course rating of 73.1 and a par of 72. The course handicap is

So on these tees the player receives 13 strokes. In a singles event using a 95% allowance, the playing handicap becomes $13 \times 0.95 = 12.35$, which rounds to 12. The same index on an easier course with a slope of 113 and a course rating equal to par would yield only 10 strokes, showing how the conversion responds to course difficulty.

A plus handicap is entered as a negative index: a player listed as a +2.0 enters −2 and receives a negative course handicap, meaning they add strokes to their gross score rather than subtract them.
