From a Dash to a Speed

A sprint time on its own is hard to picture. Is a 4.5-second 40-yard dash fast? What does it mean in miles per hour, and how would it stack up over 100 metres? This calculator answers those questions by turning a distance and a time into an average speed and a projected 100 m time, so a number from a stopwatch becomes something you can compare and chase.

How It Works

Speed is simply distance divided by time. Working in base units of metres and seconds gives a result in metres per second, which you can then read in miles per hour, kilometres per hour, or feet per second:

To project a 100 m time, the calculator assumes you hold that average speed for the full distance and divides:

Both numbers describe an average. Because you start from rest and accelerate, your speed late in a sprint is higher than this figure, and a real 100 m race carries its own acceleration and fatigue. The projection is a useful benchmark, not a prediction.

Worked Example

Sprinting 40 metres in 5.0 seconds gives an average speed of $40 \div 5.0 = 8$ metres per second. Held over 100 metres that projects to $100 \div 8 = 12.5$ seconds. In more familiar units, 8 metres per second is about 28.8 kilometres per hour. A 40-yard dash (about 36.6 metres) run in 4.5 seconds averages roughly $36.6 / 4.5 \approx 8.1$ metres per second, which is about 18 miles per hour. Held over 100 metres that projects to about 12.3 seconds — though a real 100 m, with its long acceleration, would usually be a little quicker once you reach top speed.

Average Speed Versus Top Speed

The single most common surprise is that the calculator's speed is lower than the number on a radar gun. That is expected. A standing sprint spends its opening metres accelerating, so the instantaneous speed climbs the whole way and only approaches its peak near the end. Dividing total distance by total time blends the slow start with the fast finish into one average. To capture genuine top speed you need split timing over a short segment in the middle of the run, or a flying start.

Using the Result

• Compare efforts. Converting every sprint to metres per second or miles per hour lets you line up a 30 m fly, a 40-yard dash, and a 100 m on one scale.
• Track progress. Watching your average speed creep up over a training block is a clean measure of improvement, free of distance quirks.
• Sanity-check the projection. If your projected 100 m looks far off a time you have actually run, the difference is usually acceleration — short sprints are dominated by the slow start, so they project conservatively.
