Critical Swim Speed (CSS)

Critical swim speed (CSS) is an estimate of the fastest pace a swimmer can sustain for a prolonged effort without continuous fatigue. It is derived from two maximal time trials — usually 400 m and 200 m — and serves as the swimming equivalent of a runner's threshold pace. Coaches and self-coached swimmers use it to set training intensities, because it marks the boundary between effort the aerobic system can clear and effort that accumulates fatigue quickly. The two-distance model

CSS comes from the critical-velocity concept popularized for swimming by Wakayoshi and colleagues in the early 1990s and refined as a field test by Ginn (1993). The idea is that the relationship between distance and time over short maximal efforts is approximately linear once the swimmer is past the fastest sprint distances. The slope of the line through two points — distance plotted against time — is the critical velocity: the speed at which the line would continue if the swimmer held a steady, sustainable effort.

With a 400 m and a 200 m trial, the slope is simply the extra distance divided by the extra time:

The result is the number of seconds it would take to swim 100 m at critical swim speed.

Worked example

Suppose a swimmer records 6:12 for the 400 m and 2:58 for the 200 m. Converting to seconds gives $t_{400m} = 372$ s and $t_{200m} = 178$ s. The critical swim speed is:

That is about 1:37 per 100 m. In practice this swimmer would use a pace near 1:37 per 100 m as the anchor for threshold sets, swim recovery work a few seconds slower, and push short intervals faster.

Performing the test

The two trials must be near-maximal and swum in the same session for the model to hold. After a full warm-up, swim 400 m as a hard, evenly paced time trial and record the time. Recover with several minutes of easy swimming, then swim 200 m maximally and record that. Even pacing matters: starting the 400 m too fast and fading inflates the time difference and lowers the estimated CSS. Repeating the test every four to six weeks, under similar conditions, makes the trend more informative than any single result.

Using and interpreting the result

CSS pace defines the center of a swimmer's training intensities. Threshold and tempo sets sit at or just slightly off CSS pace with short rest; longer aerobic swimming sits a few seconds per 100 m slower; speed intervals are swum faster with fuller recovery. Because CSS approximates the lactate threshold, improvements in CSS pace over a training block generally indicate improved aerobic fitness. The estimate is least reliable for swimmers whose 200 m is essentially a sprint, since the linear assumption weakens at the fastest distances.
