Stableford Points

Stableford is a golf scoring format that awards points on each hole instead of counting total strokes. This calculator works out the points for a single hole from its par, your gross score and any handicap strokes you receive, and it names the net result — par, birdie, bogey and so on. It is the quickest way to settle how a hole scored, and to understand the rule that makes Stableford so forgiving of a disaster hole.

How the points work

On every hole you have a net score, which is your gross score minus any handicap strokes allotted to you there. Stableford compares that net score with par and pays out points on a fixed scale:

The pattern is simple: a net par is worth two points, you gain one for every stroke better and lose one for every stroke worse, and the score is floored at zero. Expressed as a formula, with the net-to-par difference written as $\text{diff} = \text{net} - \text{par}$,

The $\max$ with zero is the heart of the format. Because a hole can never cost you more than the points it was worth, one ruinous hole removes only a couple of points rather than a fistful of strokes.

Handicap strokes

The strokes-received figure is what makes Stableford fair across abilities. Each hole carries a stroke index from 1 to 18 ranking it by difficulty, and you receive a stroke on every hole whose index is at or below your playing handicap. A player off 12 gets a stroke on the twelve hardest-rated holes, turning a gross six on a par four into a net five — a bogey worth one point rather than a blank.

Worked example

Suppose you play a par-five hole, take seven strokes, and receive one handicap stroke there. Your net score is $7 - 1 = 6$, which is one over par, a net bogey. The points are

so the hole is worth a single point. Without that handicap stroke the net would be seven, a net double bogey worth zero, which shows how a stroke received can rescue a point on a tough hole.

From hole to round

A full Stableford round is just the sum of the points from all eighteen holes, and a typical par-shooting round scores around 36 points.
