Two Ways to Find Your Stride

Stride length is one of the quiet drivers of running. Together with cadence it sets your speed, and it is the number your GPS watch uses to guess how far you ran on a treadmill. This calculator estimates it two ways: from your height, when you just want a quick figure, and from your speed and cadence, when you want the real distance you cover at a given pace.

Step Length From Height

For walking and easy running, step length scales closely with height. A widely used approximation multiplies your height by a fixed ratio:

where $k$ is about 0.415 for men and 0.413 for women. The small difference reflects average leg-to-torso proportions. A full stride is two steps:

This method needs nothing but your height, which makes it handy for a starting estimate — but it does not know how fast you are moving.

Step Length From Speed and Cadence

A more direct method uses the ground you actually cover. If you take $f$ steps per minute at a speed $v$, then each step covers:

Cadence here counts both feet, so dividing by 60 converts steps-per-minute into steps-per-second. This figure reflects your real running, including how your stride opens up as you speed up.

Worked Example

A runner cruising at a steady pace with a cadence of 170 steps per minute:

At 12 km/h (3.33 m/s) and 170 steps per minute, each step covers $3.33 / (170/60) \approx 1.18$ m, so a full stride is about 2.35 m. For comparison, a 1.80 m runner using the height method gets $1.80 \times 0.415 \approx 0.75$ m per step, or 1.49 m per stride — shorter, because the height method reflects an easy pace rather than this faster one. At 7.5 mph (3.33 m/s) and 170 steps per minute, each step covers about 3.9 ft, so a full stride is roughly 7.7 ft. A 5 ft 11 in runner using the height method gets about 2.4 ft per step, or 4.9 ft per stride — shorter, because the height method reflects an easy pace rather than this faster one.

Choosing Between the Two Methods

• Calibrating a treadmill or GPS. Use the speed-and-cadence method at your usual pace; it matches the distance you really travel.
• A quick ballpark. The height method is fine when you only know your height and want an order-of-magnitude figure.
• Form work. Watch how step length changes when you adjust cadence at the same speed — a higher cadence shortens each step and tends to pull your foot strike back under your hips.
