Average revenue per user defined

Average revenue per user (ARPU) is the total revenue a business earns in a period divided by the average number of users it served in that period. It answers a deceptively simple question: how much is a typical account worth? Subscription, SaaS, telecom, and media businesses lean on ARPU because it strips revenue growth down to a per-account figure, making it easy to see whether the business is earning more from each user or simply adding more of them.

ARPU pairs naturally with growth and retention metrics. Revenue can rise because the user base grew, because each user pays more, or both — and ARPU isolates the second effect.

The ARPU formula

Both the numerator and the denominator must cover the same period. A month of revenue divided by a year-end user count produces a meaningless number. For subscription businesses, the numerator is usually recurring revenue for the period; the denominator is the average number of accounts, counting free and paying users alike.

Averaging the user base

When the number of users changes during the period — which it almost always does — a single point-in-time count distorts the ratio. The common fix is to average the starting and ending counts:

Using only the ending count understates ARPU during growth and overstates it during decline. Averaging keeps the denominator representative of the whole period.

ARPU versus ARPPU

In a freemium model with many free accounts, ARPPU is much larger than ARPU. The gap between the two is itself informative: a wide gap means most of the base is on free plans, and monetization depends on converting them. Worked example

A subscription product earns $120,000 in a month. Its user base starts at 3,800 and ends at 4,200, for an average of 4,000 users. Of those, an average of 1,500 are paying customers. The average revenue per user is:

Each account is worth $30 on average, but each paying account is worth $80. The gap shows that a large share of the base is on free plans — a signal to focus on conversion as well as acquisition.

A note on definitions

ARPU and ARPPU depend entirely on how revenue and the user base are defined and on the period chosen. One team may count only recurring revenue while another folds in one-time fees; one may average the user base while another uses a period-end snapshot. None is uniquely correct, but the figures are only comparable when the definitions match. Keep the same revenue components and the same counting method across periods, and be cautious comparing against external benchmarks that may use different conventions.
