What sales commission is

Sales commission is pay tied directly to results: a share of the sales a person brings in, paid on top of or instead of a fixed salary. The share is set by a commission rate, a percentage applied to the sales figure. The mechanics are simple arithmetic, but the pay structure around them — commission only, or a base amount plus commission — changes how much a given month of sales is worth.

The formula

Commission is the sales figure multiplied by the commission rate:

Under a commission-only plan, that commission is the whole of the pay. Under a base-plus-commission plan, a fixed base is added:

The rate is a proportion, so a rate written as 10% enters the formula as 0.10. Sales of $50,000 at 10% earn $5,000 in commission.

Worked example: a base-plus-commission month

A field rep works on a plan that pays a $3,000 base for the month plus 8% commission on sales. In one month the rep closes $62,500 in sales.

So the month's pay is $8,000, of which $5,000 is performance-based. The base sets a floor: even a month with no sales still pays $3,000, while a strong month is rewarded through the commission on top.

Commission-only versus base plus commission

A commission-only plan pays purely on results — nothing is earned without sales, but a high rate can make strong months very lucrative. A base-plus-commission plan trades some of that upside for stability: the base covers a predictable minimum, usually alongside a lower rate.

The break point between the two is the sales level at which the commission-only rate matches the base-plus plan's guaranteed floor. Below that level, the base plan pays more; above it, the extra rate on the commission-only plan pulls ahead. Which suits a role depends on how variable the sales pipeline is and how much income certainty the seller needs.

Tiered commission and other refinements

Real commission agreements often add structure this calculator does not model:

• Tiered rates raise the percentage once sales pass a threshold — for example 5% on the first $40,000 and 10% above it. Compute each tier on its own slice of sales and add the parts.
• Caps limit total commission once a ceiling is reached.
• Accelerators do the opposite, boosting the rate past a target to reward over-performance.
• Draws advance commission against future sales, then reconcile later.
