What conversion rate measures

Conversion rate is the share of visitors who complete a goal action — a purchase, a sign-up, a lead form, a download. It compresses a whole funnel into one number: out of everyone who arrived, how many did the thing that matters. A rising rate means the same traffic produces more results; a falling rate means the funnel is leaking somewhere between arrival and action.

The metric only makes sense when the two counts cover the same period and the same population. Mixing this month's conversions with last month's visitors, or counting sessions on one side and unique visitors on the other, produces a number that looks precise but measures nothing consistent.

The formula

Conversion rate divides conversions by visitors and expresses the result as a percentage:

For 150 conversions from 5,000 visitors, the rate is 150 / 5,000 = 0.03, or 3%. If each conversion is worth an average amount, total revenue follows directly:

At an average order value of $80, those 150 conversions bring in 150 × $80 = $12,000.

Worked example: a landing page test

A team runs a paid campaign to a landing page. Over one week the page receives 5,000 visitors and records 150 conversions, each worth an average of $80.

• Conversion rate: 150 / 5,000 = 3%
• Total revenue: 150 × $80 = $12,000
• Revenue per visitor: $12,000 / 5,000 = $2.40

The team then redesigns the page and reruns the test. The new version converts 210 of 5,000 visitors, a rate of 210 / 5,000 = 4.2%. Same traffic, same spend, but revenue rises to 210 × $80 = $16,800 — a gain of $4,800 from a one-point-two-point lift in rate. Working backward to a traffic target

The relationship also runs in reverse. If a goal is fixed — say 300 conversions in a quarter — and a realistic conversion rate is known, the visitors required follow by rearranging the formula:

To reach 300 conversions at a 3% rate, the funnel needs 300 / 0.03 = 10,000 visitors. The result is rounded up, since a fractional visitor cannot exist. This is the planning view of the same metric: instead of asking "what rate did we get?", it asks "how much traffic does this target demand?" Halving the required traffic means doubling the rate — usually cheaper than buying twice the visitors.

Choosing a denominator

The denominator choice quietly shapes the number. Two common options:

Sessions are always at least as many as unique visitors, so a session-based rate is usually lower than a visitor-based rate for the same conversions. Neither is wrong, but a rate must use one denominator consistently to be comparable over time or across channels.

Reading the number in context

A single conversion rate says little on its own. E-commerce checkout rates often sit in the low single digits, while a rate measured on a narrow, high-intent audience can run much higher. The useful comparisons are against the funnel's own history, against segments of the same funnel, and against the specific channel and action being measured — not a universal benchmark.
